After stopping at the market in Zagora for provisions for the next 2 days it was off south towards the Sahara. We had to go over some mountains first but these were getting easy now! We get to the town of Mhamid where the tarmac ends, turning west we follow a sandy route over some dunes after letting a few psi out of the tyres. The basics are keep going, don't stop, turn the wheel from side to side slightly to stop a wedge of sand forming and give a fair amount of throttle! Over the dunes power up and just let the vehicle virtually stop at the top before descending down the other side. We take it in turns to make sure if one person gets stuck we don't all then get stuck behind! No one got stuck so once through the sand it was across a surprisingly rocky terrain through a small ex fishing village of Zaouia Sidi-Adb-en-Nibi that is on the edge of a dried salt lake Iriki. On the southern edge we make camp at the foot of the great sand sea Erg Chegaga.

Whilst it is quite hot at 44 deg C there is a (hot) breeze so it is not too bad ... a few weeks ago it had been 57 deg C!! We then go for a play in the sand and the Toyota is the first to the top of the dune in front of us! Quickly followed by other vehicles we then try out some other dunes ... unfortunately a slight miss calculation ends with my poor Toyota at a very jaunty angle! With a winch on the back to stop it going over and two winches on the front the Toyota is back on firm ground again! Time for some dinner now and we all boil up some army ration packs .... and obviously a few beers!
